Calculation Method & Options

AstroMatrix calculates composite charts by finding the mathematical midpoint between each pair of corresponding planets. We use professional-grade Swiss Ephemeris data and offer two primary calculation methods:

Midpoint Method (Standard)

Each composite planet is calculated as the midpoint between both partners' same planets. For example, if Partner A's Sun is at 5° Aries and Partner B's Sun is at 15° Libra, the composite Sun is at 10° Cancer (the exact midpoint). This creates a balanced third chart.

Reference Place Method

For the Ascendant and house cusps, a reference place must be chosen - typically where the couple lives together, where they met, or a significant shared location. This determines the composite Ascendant and house system.

House Systems

Like natal charts, composite charts can use Placidus, Whole Sign, Equal, or other house systems. The house system affects which life areas are emphasized in the relationship chart.

Zodiac System

Most composite charts use the tropical zodiac system, consistent with Western astrology practice. Sidereal composites are also supported for Vedic astrology practitioners.

Birth Time and Location Considerations

Both Birth Times Required

Accurate birth times for both partners enable precise calculation of the composite Ascendant and houses. Without exact times, you can still calculate composite planetary positions (Sun through Pluto) but the Ascendant and house system will be approximate.

Reference Location Selection

Unknown Birth Time Alternatives

If one or both partners lack exact birth times, use noon charts to calculate composite planetary positions. While you'll miss accurate house placements, the planetary midpoints still reveal the relationship's essential nature.

Davison Chart Alternative

For couples without accurate birth times, the Davison relationship chart (based on the midpoint in time and space) offers an alternative that doesn't require precise birth times for house accuracy. Both methods provide valuable relationship insights.
