Full Moon in Scorpio

The first of three lunations lights up the sky on the very first day of May. In the ancient pagan calendar, the 1st of May was a holy day - the day of Beltane festival, a fertility festival. In the Southern Hemisphere, it’s Samhain, also known as Halloween.

Whichever way we look at it, it’s an important moment, both symbolically and astrologically.

La Luna is ‘fallen’ in Scorpio, as well as in what’s known as Via Combusta. This is not a comfortable place for such a tender planet. Angst and anguish might be felt, yet through this, we find emotional breakthroughs.

The energy also serves beautifully for these pagan holidays, lending intensity and reminding us that surrender is the doorway to freedom. When we let go, when we face the shadow and own it, we find the peace of the Sun in Taurus. Balancing crisis with calm is our calling now, particularly seeing as Pluto, ruler of the underworld, is angled to the Moon via a strong square.

and so, down we go, deep into the rabbit hole, plunging into the darkness and surviving all manner of crisis until we discover the diamond within. It’s a witch’s Moon - perfect for powerful ritualistic work, spells, and deep, intentional weaving.

If we don’t work with these energies from an emotionally mature space - holding a safe container for deep emotion - traumas might arise and overwhelm us. Collective or personal, these strains are felt as ripples throughout the fabric of reality, inviting release, understanding, and breakthrough.

If we’re feeling intensely, if things are moving toward a breaking point, we’re reminded to sit with what’s coming and look into the abyss instead of projecting, engaging in power plays, or other shadowy behaviors.

Transformation is possible. It’s well within reach. It comes with the caveat of collapse, first. When we allow this collapse, we invite metamorphosis, much like the caterpillar shifting into the butterfly.

Mars, the ancient traditional ruler of Scorpio, sits in his rulership of Aries. The Warlord or Warrioress is strong here, brave, bold, and fearless - yet impulsive and reckless too, especially with a powerful square to Jupiter.

Jupiter expands all he touches, without discrimination.

This square might produce explosions, literally or otherwise, heedlessly urging us towards rushing in where angels fear to tread. When we act purely on emotion, we risk making mistakes we could come to regret. Cool heads prevail when we harness the discipline of the separating conjunction of Mars with Saturn, when we learn to put our own brakes on and remind ourselves that limitations are there to help us, not frustrate us.

There’s a way out: the Moon has a wide trine aspect to Jupiter and is what’s known as a ‘micro moon.’ This somewhat reduces the intense energies and allows the heart to lead. Jupiter is supportive, even if it adds to the emotional force. This reminds us to have faith, be kind, and expand from this experience. We have the resources we need. We are already empowered.
