New Moon in Aries

There are few Moons as fiery as this one this year.

Although the Astrological New Year was around a month ago, this New Moon in Aries carries within it the same kind of energy. The same flavor. The same seeds. It’s yet another opportunity to truly begin again.

The archetype of the Cosmic Warrioress or Warrior - Athena, Artemis, a Valkyrie, an Amazonian, Ares, Thor - these are energies that live within all of us. We all, to some degree or another, possess within us the fierceness of the Gladiator, the Fighter, the Doer. To deny this essential part of us would be akin to going to war with ourselves.

These days, many of us - thankfully - don’t have to do literal battle. Instead, we go to work. We play sports. We compete for status, success, reputation. We go after what we desire without harm - mostly.

So, what is it that we most desire at this New Moon? If we could have whatever we wanted - selfishly - what would we manifest? What would make our blood roar with fierce, primal pleasure and excitement?

We now have the rare opportunity, with so many planets in Aries - including the ruler, Mars - to leap into action and do as we please for the next several months. When we channel this energy of ‘war’ towards something sustainable, satisfying, energising, inspiring and bold, we subvert the darker energies of Mars and Aries. We don’t crave bloodshed or to conquer without consequence. Instead, we use our energies in a pure, unsullied, almost naïve way. Aries trusts. Aries believes. Aries never manipulates or plays games. In fact, this sign is known for its loyalty, courage and ability to lead, take initiative and stand tall and honourable. Acting with honour, yet for our own good, are things that we can get behind at this New Moon.

There’s more. Mars dances in a tight sextile with Pluto. The higher expression of this warlike planet, Pluto lends Mars staying power, intensity, depth and meaning. Whatever we do, we’ll go all the way.

Mars also tightly conjuncts Saturn, which, in some eyes, might be perceived as highly negative. Not so. In fact, the discipline and structure of Saturn comes in handy when all an impulsive Aries Mars wants to do is act without thinking. Saturn reminds us to slow down, consider, to be carefully productive, to run a marathon instead of a sprint. Frustration only binds us if we’re pushing where we shouldn’t push. In some instances, we need to realise what’s not flowing and take the rejection as a redirection, rather than taking it personally.

With Mercury and Neptune also close to Mars, there’s thought behind action, a vision, a dream. But we do need to tighten it. Ideals are one thing. Reality is another. Tempering Saturnian care with impulsiveness is where our work lies
